Discover a different side of Sint Maarten at Parotte Ville Bird Park, where colorful tropical birds offer a memorable wildlife experience beyond the beaches — a unique stop for your SXM travel guide.

The Wilder Side of SXM
Sint Maarten may be best known for its turquoise waters, white-sand beaches and airplanes flying impossibly low over Maho Beach but there's much more to discover beyond the coastline. This small Caribbean island has a fascinating mix of cultures, landscapes and experiences, from the colorful streets of Philipsburg to unexpected pockets of tropical nature tucked away from the busier tourist areas.
While the best things to do in Sint Maarten often revolve around the ocean, some of the island's most memorable experiences happen farther inland. Exploring these quieter corners offers a different perspective on SXM, where local attractions and wildlife encounters reveal a side of island life that doesn't always make it into the typical travel itinerary.
One of those places is Parotte Ville Bird Park, a small tropical bird sanctuary where colorful parrots and other exotic birds create an experience quite unlike the island's familiar beaches and waterfront attractions. It's an opportunity to slow down, get a little closer to nature and discover something unexpected during your time in Sint Maarten.

My Bibimbap Moment
This experience added: Delight.
Parotte Ville Bird Park was easily one of my favorite experiences in Sint Maarten. I've always loved being close to animals but what made this visit so memorable was how natural the interactions felt. Birds flew overhead, landed on my shoulders and eagerly reached into the little cups of seeds we carried. There was something wonderful about being surrounded by so much color and movement, never quite knowing where the next bird might land.
The entire experience felt wonderfully immersive, from the flutter of wings just inches away to the unexpected pleasure of seeing a toucan up close. Nothing about the moment felt staged, which made it all the more special. Parotte Ville reminded me how much joy can come from simply sharing a little space with the natural world.
My Two-Week Caribbean Travel Itinerary
My two-week Caribbean adventure took me through four destinations, each revealing a different side of island life. Sint Maarten was the starting point, where beautiful beaches, colorful streets and unexpected experiences like Parotte Ville Bird Park offered a perfect introduction to the Caribbean beyond its coastline.
Just across the border, Saint Martin brought a distinctly French influence, with charming coastal villages, local markets and a more relaxed atmosphere. Although the two share one island, each has its own character and cultural identity.
From there, I traveled south to Dominica, trading sandy beaches for dense rainforests, dramatic waterfalls and natural hot springs. A boat journey along the Indian River, one of the filming locations for Pirates of the Caribbean, was among the most memorable experiences, along with a muddy hike to Middleham Falls.
The journey ended in Antigua, where quiet beaches, giant tortoises and swimming with stingrays offered a final mix of relaxation and adventure. Together, these four destinations made for a Caribbean itinerary full of contrasts, from colorful island culture and tropical wildlife to wild, untamed landscapes.

Visiting Parotte Ville Bird Park in SXM
A flutter of wings overhead, a flash of brilliant color and suddenly there's a tropical bird perched on your shoulder. Parotte Ville Bird Park brings you face-to-face with an array of exotic birds in an immersive setting where the next encounter is never quite predictable.
Among the more unique things to do in SXM, this small bird sanctuary offers a chance to observe colorful parrots and other tropical birds, feed them from little cups of seeds and enjoy the energy of birds moving all around you. From curious feathered visitors eager for a snack to a beautiful toucan, it's a playful, up-close experience that adds something unexpected to a Sint Maarten travel itinerary.
Up Close & a Little Wild in SXM
Not every adventure in SXM involves turquoise water or an adrenaline rush. Tucked away in Belvedere, Parotte Ville Bird Park offers something entirely different: an intimate encounter with tropical birds in a lush, colorful setting. For anyone who loves animals, it's one of those unexpected experiences that can easily become a favorite part of the trip.
Founded in 2015 by George Parotte, the sanctuary brings together his passion for birds, tropical plants and local history. Alongside the aviary, visitors can discover a medicinal garden and small heritage museum, adding a cultural dimension to the experience. It's a lovely departure from the island's more familiar attractions and one of the more unique things to do in St. Maarten.
Stepping inside the walk-through aviary feels like entering a little world of its own. Tropical plants fill the enclosure, with branches, ropes and birdhouses creating layers of greenery and places to perch. Overhead, flashes of color move between the foliage as birds swoop through the open space, their calls filling the air.
The aviary is home to a colorful mix of tropical birds, including ring-necked parakeets, sun conures and black-headed caiques. Some are tiny and quick, while others are larger, louder and impossible to overlook. Their brilliant feathers stand out against the greenery, creating an ever-changing display of color and movement.
ℹ️ Good to Know | Watch where you step. Not all the birds stay overhead. Some hop, forage and play along the dirt floor, so keep an eye out for little feathered friends underfoot.
One of the highlights of visiting Parotte Ville is the chance to feed the birds from a small cup of seeds attached to a wooden handle. It sounds simple enough but the moment that cup appears, the experience takes on a life of its own. There's very little waiting involved when curious birds know exactly where to find their next snack.
Within moments, colorful little visitors begin arriving, landing on the cup, nearby branches and occasionally your shoulder. Many birds are wonderfully confident, often approaching before you've had a chance to settle in. It's a little overwhelming at first but there's something thrilling about being surrounded by creatures that seem completely at ease with your presence.
Look closely and even the simple act of eating becomes fascinating. Birds carefully select their favorite seeds, crack the shells with their curved beaks and let the empty pieces fall onto your hands or back into the cup. The rhythm is almost mechanical, each tiny movement precise and efficient. It's easy to lose track of time watching them work.
Some birds are more willing to share than others. Once comfortably perched on a cup, a determined little visitor may have no intention of leaving. The guide can show you how to gently encourage a bird to move along, although convincing yourself to interrupt such an enthusiastic diner is another matter entirely.
💡 My Tip | Some birds get a little greedy with the seed cups. If one refuses to budge, the guide suggested gently tipping the cup to encourage it to move along, giving another bird a chance to enjoy a snack.
Spend a little time observing the birds and their individual personalities begin to emerge. Some are bold and sociable, eager to investigate every new visitor. Others prefer the quieter corners, watching from beneath leaves or peeking out of birdhouses. It's this mix of curiosity, confidence and caution that makes the experience feel so alive.
There's no need to rush through the aviary. Wander slowly, revisit different corners and give yourself time to notice what's happening beyond the feeding cups. Birds move between perches, explore the greenery and interact with one another, offering a glimpse into their behavior that can be just as interesting as the close-up encounters.
Among the most recognizable residents are the Indian ring-necked parakeets, also known as rose-ringed parakeets. Their vivid green plumage, long tapered tails and bright red beaks make them easy to spot against the tropical foliage. Intelligent and highly social, these beautiful birds bring plenty of personality to the aviary, especially when food is involved.
With so many species sharing the space, identifying them becomes part of the fun. Look beyond feather color to the shape of the beak, length of the tail, body size and distinctive markings. The guide can help point out these differences, revealing details that are easy to miss when everything is moving around you.
Not every bird is interested in entertaining visitors. Some spend their time eating, exploring branches or investigating the birdhouses, while others seem perfectly happy observing the activity around them. These ordinary moments offer a different kind of encounter, one that rewards curiosity rather than a full cup of seeds.
Perhaps the most amusing residents are the ones who manage to sleep through it all. Perched on exposed branches with their eyes closed, they seem oblivious to the fluttering wings, lively calls and constant movement nearby. There's something wonderfully funny about such complete indifference in the middle of a busy aviary.
Few birds command attention quite like the sun conure. Native to northeastern South America, this medium-sized parrot is covered in brilliant yellow and orange feathers, with touches of green and blue along its wings and tail. Against the deep green foliage, the colors are almost electric. Their loud, expressive calls make them just as easy to recognize by sound.
Of course, not everyone wants to be the center of attention. Some of the quieter birds prefer the comfort of their little houses, occasionally poking out their heads to inspect the visitors. As a fellow introvert, I had a soft spot for these shy characters and made sure they were offered a little attention, too.
Feeding time isn't always a peaceful affair. Some of the larger, more assertive birds quickly claim the best positions, occasionally pushing smaller companions aside to reach the seeds. Watching these interactions reveals a surprisingly lively social dynamic beneath all those beautiful feathers. Even the prettiest birds can be a little pushy.
📸 Photo Tip | Photographing these active little birds takes patience, especially with a cup of seeds in one hand and a camera in the other. They're rarely still for long, so aim your focus toward the eyes and be ready for a few blurry shots along the way.
Toward the back of the enclosure, the aviary opens up into a wonderful vantage point for watching the birds in motion. They weave between branches, dart through gaps in the greenery and pass just inches overhead. Loose feathers drift toward the ground while flashes of yellow, green and orange disappear into the foliage. It's a beautiful little world of movement, color and controlled chaos.
What makes Parotte Ville so memorable isn't simply the chance to feed a tropical bird. It's the feeling of being immersed in their world, surrounded by the sounds of wings, curious personalities and constant little surprises. Allow yourself time to linger. Some of the best moments happen when you're doing nothing more than watching.
Before leaving, there's one more feathered resident worth meeting. In a separate enclosure lives Sam the toucan, whose oversized bill and extraordinary coloring make him look almost unreal. After the lively energy of the main aviary, this quieter encounter offers a completely different perspective on the fascinating birds at Parotte Ville.
Meet Sam the Toucan
With his enormous orange-and-yellow bill, pale blue markings around his eyes and striking black plumage, Sam the toucan looks like a character brought to life from an illustration. Toucans belong to a different bird family from parrots and some species eat small animals, including other birds. Sam lives separately from the smaller aviary residents, allowing visitors to appreciate this extraordinary bird in a quieter setting.
Under the guide's supervision, visitors may have the opportunity to offer Sam a little soft fruit. Watching him delicately take pieces of banana with that enormous bill is so interesting, especially considering its size. For me, seeing a toucan this close was an unexpected highlight, adding one final moment of wonder to an already unforgettable wildlife experience in SXM.
Visiting Parotte Ville Responsibly
Close-up wildlife encounters can be unforgettable but animal welfare should always come first when choosing attractions in SXM. At Parotte Ville Bird Park, the birds moved freely around the aviary during my visit, approaching visitors for seeds, flying overhead or retreating to quieter corners. The interactions felt spontaneous rather than staged, which made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Still, a positive visitor experience doesn't necessarily tell the full story of an animal's wellbeing. Before visiting any bird sanctuary, it's worth asking about the animals' origins, veterinary care, breeding practices and opportunities to avoid human contact. These are important considerations when evaluating whether an attraction supports responsible wildlife tourism.
The most meaningful animal encounters are built on curiosity and respect, allowing us to appreciate wildlife without putting the experience ahead of the animals themselves.
My Bibimbap Moment
Every destination adds another ingredient to our life's recipe but sometimes it's the unexpected encounters that leave the biggest impression. At Parotte Ville Bird Park in SXM, a simple cup of seeds opened the door to a world of brilliant colors, fluttering wings and curious little personalities. There was something wonderfully wild about being surrounded by birds that could appear on your shoulder at any moment. What began as a visit to a small tropical sanctuary became one of my favorite experiences in Sint Maarten. Here's the ingredient Parotte Ville added to My Bibimbap Life.
Today's Bibimbap Moment
🥢 Flavor: Electric
🌿 Ingredient: Delight
❤️ Best Memory: Being surrounded by colorful birds, with curious little visitors landing on my shoulders and feeding from my cup
🎒 Take With You: Some of life's best moments are the ones you can't plan. Stay curious, embrace the unexpected and leave a little room for the wild.
When I think back on Parotte Ville, I remember the flashes of brilliant color, the flutter of wings just inches from my face and the tiny personalities that made every encounter different. I loved watching the birds move freely around the aviary, from the bold little characters competing for seeds to the quieter ones tucked away among the greenery. Meeting Sam the toucan was an unexpected bonus but what stayed with me most was the simple joy of being so close to these beautiful creatures. Sometimes, a little wildness is all it takes to remind us how wonderful the world can be.
Parotte Ville Bird Park Travel Essentials
A visit to Parotte Ville Bird Park in SXM is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace, with time to wander the aviary, observe the birds and let the encounters unfold naturally. Plan to arrive earlier in the day when the birds tend to be more active and allow at least an hour to explore without feeling rushed. Comfortable shoes, a little patience and a camera ready for unexpected moments will make the experience even better.
Whether you're exploring the island by rental car or taxi, Parotte Ville is an easy addition to a Sint Maarten travel itinerary and a welcome change of pace from the beaches. Give yourself room to linger. Some of the most memorable moments happen when you simply stand still and let the birds come to you.
When to Go
Parotte Ville Bird Park can be enjoyed year-round, although the drier months from December through April offer comfortable conditions for exploring SXM. With daytime temperatures typically around 80–85°F (27–29°C), mornings are a great time to visit the tropical aviary before the afternoon heat settles in.
During May through November, temperatures and humidity tend to rise, with more frequent rain showers. The aviary offers some shade from the surrounding greenery but the tropical climate can still feel warm and humid. Keep in mind that June through November is Atlantic hurricane season, so check weather conditions when planning your visit.
💡 My Tip | Visit earlier in the morning when the birds tend to be more active and eager to feed. You'll have more opportunities for close-up encounters and photography before the heat of the day.
How to Get There
Parotte Ville Bird Park is located in Belvedere, on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten, a short drive inland from Philipsburg. The easiest way to reach the sanctuary is by rental car or taxi, making it a convenient stop while exploring the eastern side of SXM.
From Philipsburg, allow approximately 10–15 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Visitors staying near Simpson Bay or Maho Beach should plan for a longer journey, generally around 25–40 minutes. The park is tucked away from the main tourist areas, so using GPS or confirming the location with your driver is helpful.
✈️ Travel Tip | If you're taking a taxi, arrange your return ride with the driver before arriving. Parotte Ville is outside the busiest tourist areas, so finding another taxi immediately after your visit may not be as easy.
Where to Stay
Since Parotte Ville Bird Park is located in Belvedere, on the eastern side of SXM, staying near Philipsburg or Oyster Pond offers convenient access to the sanctuary. However, the island is small enough that you can comfortably visit from most popular areas, especially with a rental car.
For a balance of beaches, restaurants and sightseeing, Simpson Bay makes an excellent base, while Cupecoy offers a quieter coastal setting close to beautiful Mullet Bay Beach. I stayed in Cupecoy and loved having a peaceful apartment to return to after exploring the island.
💡 My Tip | There's no need to choose your accommodation around Parotte Ville alone. Pick a neighborhood that suits the rest of your SXM itinerary and plan the sanctuary as a morning outing.
Where I Stayed in Sint Maarten
For beach access & a relaxed island base — Mullet Bay Loft Condo
I stayed in a comfortable one-bedroom loft in Cupecoy, with a kitchen, laundry and easy access to Mullet Bay Beach, making it a great home base for exploring both sides of the island.

How to Get Around
Renting a car offers the most flexibility for exploring SXM, especially when visiting attractions like Parotte Ville Bird Park that sit outside the main tourist areas. The island is relatively small but traffic around Philipsburg and Simpson Bay can make short drives take longer than expected. Driving is on the right, and there are no formal border checkpoints between Dutch Sint Maarten and French Saint Martin.
Taxis are a convenient alternative if you're only planning a few outings. I took a taxi to Parotte Ville, which made the visit easy without needing a rental car. Local minibuses are inexpensive and connect the island's main towns but their routes aren't ideal for reaching the sanctuary directly.
💡 My Tip | If you're visiting Parotte Ville by taxi, arrange your return journey in advance. For travelers planning several stops across SXM, renting a car for a day or two may be more practical and economical.
How Long to Stay
Allow 1–1.5 hours at Parotte Ville Bird Park to wander the aviary, feed the birds and enjoy the close-up encounters without rushing. Wildlife lovers and photographers may want a little extra time to observe the different species and capture those unpredictable moments.
For the wider island, 3–4 days in Sint Maarten gives you time to explore Philipsburg, relax at Mullet Bay, watch the planes at Maho Beach and enjoy a few adventures beyond the coastline. If you're also visiting French Saint Martin, consider extending your stay to 5–6 days to experience both sides of the island at a more relaxed pace.
💡 My Tip | Plan Parotte Ville as a morning activity, leaving the afternoon free for a beach, local lunch or another SXM adventure. It's an easy way to add something unexpected to your island itinerary.
Tours & Day Trips
Parotte Ville Bird Park is best explored independently, with time to wander the aviary, feed the birds and enjoy the experience at your own pace. There's no need to book a separate island tour just to visit the sanctuary, and the on-site guide can help introduce you to the different birds.
For more things to do in SXM, consider an island sightseeing tour that takes in Philipsburg, Maho Beach and scenic coastal viewpoints. If you're craving a little adventure, the Flying Dutchman zipline offers a completely different kind of thrill, while snorkeling excursions and catamaran cruises reveal the island's beautiful coastline from the water.
Explore More of SXM
From guided island tours and sailing adventures to snorkeling excursions and visits to French Saint Martin, there's plenty to discover beyond Parotte Ville. A guided experience can be especially useful if you're short on time or prefer to leave the transportation to someone else.

💡 My Tip | Visit Parotte Ville independently in the morning, then save a guided tour for an experience that's harder to arrange on your own, such as a sailing excursion or an island-wide sightseeing trip.
What to Bring
Visiting Parotte Ville Bird Park in SXM doesn't require much preparation but a few essentials will make the experience more comfortable. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and comfortable closed-toe shoes, especially since birds sometimes hop and forage along the dirt floor. Choose clothes you don't mind getting a little messy, as curious birds may land on your shoulders and leave behind the occasional seed shell or surprise.
Bring a camera or phone with plenty of storage to capture the colorful birds, along with a reusable water bottle for the tropical heat. A portable charger is useful if you're spending the rest of the day exploring Sint Maarten. Keep loose accessories secure and avoid anything dangling that might attract an inquisitive beak.
📸 Photo Tip | Photographing moving birds while holding a cup of seeds can be tricky. Be patient, use a fast shutter speed if your camera allows and aim your focus toward the eyes for sharper images. A few blurry shots are practically guaranteed — I certainly had mine.
Good to Know
A few practical details will help make your visit to Parotte Ville Bird Park in SXM more enjoyable. The sanctuary is located in Belvedere, away from the island's busiest tourist areas, so arrange transportation in advance if you're not driving. English is widely spoken, and US dollars are commonly accepted throughout Dutch Sint Maarten. Bring some cash for admission or small purchases, and confirm current opening hours and ticket prices before visiting.
Inside the aviary, let the birds approach at their own pace. Some are eager to feed from your cup, while others prefer to watch from the greenery. Move gently, follow the guide's instructions and watch where you step, as smaller birds sometimes hop and forage along the dirt floor. Keep loose accessories secure and avoid touching or picking up birds unless the guide specifically permits it.
The tropical heat can be intense, even away from the beaches. Morning visits are ideal, when the birds tend to be more active and temperatures are generally more comfortable. Allow enough time to enjoy the experience without rushing, especially if you're hoping to photograph the birds in motion.
🌍 One Last Thing | Parotte Ville offers a different perspective on SXM, where brilliant colors, curious wildlife and unexpected encounters reveal a wilder side of the island beyond its famous beaches.
Watch planes fly right overhead from your oceanfront suite, with Maho Beach's turquoise water and beach bars just steps away.
