Cambodia
Breathtakingly serene, unapologetically traditional and beautifully simple, Cambodia is a country youโll never forget. Cambodia a nation in Southeast Asia, whose diverse landscapes encompass low-lying plains, rolling mountains, the stunning Mekong Delta and Gulf of Thailand coastline. Its capital, Phnom Penh, is a bustling city home to Central Market, Royal Palace and the National Museum's historical and archaeological exhibits.
In the countryโs northwest city of Siem Reap, Cambodia is best known for its UNESCO World Heritage Site, Angkor Wat Complex, the largest religious monument in the world and seat of the 12th century Angkor Empire. This massive temple complex was built during the Khmer Empire between 1113 and 1150 AD. Fairly recently, Cambodia fell into a dark time when the Khmer Rouge regime forced a Cambodian genocide, a systematic persecution and killing of Cambodian citizens under the leadership of Prime Minister, Pol Pot. This resulted in the deaths of nearly 25% of Cambodia's population, accounting for 1.5 to 2 million people between 1975 to 1979. For a fascinating first hand account by Loung Ung, First They Killed My Father, was an incredibly touching read.
